Caleb Wilson's first Bulls game came with more than a box score.
The rookie put up 35 points, five rebounds and three blocks in his Las Vegas Summer League debut, even as Chicago lost 97-96 to the Memphis Grizzlies. The production was loud enough on its own. The context made it heavier.
Wilson told The Athletic that he cried before the game because it had been five months since he last played. He said the end of his North Carolina season, the tournament loss and his coach being fired all stayed with him while he waited for another real chance to compete.
"So coming out today, it just felt like I've been waiting so long for this opportunity," Wilson said.
That is the part Chicago can take from the night beyond the scoring burst. Wilson arrived carrying the emotion of a long layoff and still looked ready to play through it. A 35-point debut does not settle what he will be as an NBA player, especially in July, but it gives the Bulls a clean first read: the stage did not look too big, and the wait clearly sharpened him instead of flattening him.
