Byron Scott's civil case is moving toward trial, with one major defendant already settling.
Campbell Hall, the Studio City private school where Scott allegedly sexually assaulted a 15-year-old student in 1987, reached a confidential settlement with the woman in Los Angeles Superior Court, according to the report cited in the Reddit post.
The settlement amount is under seal until Scott's civil trial concludes. The trial is scheduled to begin Sept. 8 in Van Nuys. Hayley Dylan is seeking unspecified economic and non-economic damages from Scott, who was 26 and married at the time of the alleged encounter.
According to Dylan's complaint, the incident happened while several Lakers players were filming an instructional basketball video in the Campbell Hall gym. The complaint says Scott and Dylan walked away from faculty members and the production crew before Scott allegedly assaulted her in a janitor's closet.
Scott has admitted sexual contact, but has disputed the framing of the case. In court filings, he said he did not know Dylan was a student and believed she was 18 and part of the video production crew. Dylan's surname at the time was Mendell.
The case places a serious legal matter next to a long Lakers history. Scott played on three championship teams in Los Angeles and later coached the franchise, but the upcoming trial will center on the 1987 allegation, the school settlement and what a civil jury hears in Van Nuys.
