Kawhi Leonard Trade Waits On NBA Investigation

NBA forward in game action during a playoff matchup
Summary

The Raptors and Clippers have put the Kawhi Leonard trade on hold until the NBA finishes its investigation into the Clippers and Aspiration.

Kawhi Leonard's return to Toronto is no longer just a trade story. It is tied directly to the NBA's investigation into the Clippers.

The Raptors and Clippers have put their Leonard deal on hold until the league finishes its probe into whether Los Angeles circumvented salary-cap rules. The investigation centers on a reported $28 million endorsement contract between Leonard and Aspiration Fund Adviser LLC, a company that later filed for bankruptcy. The league opened the probe after Pablo Torre's reporting in September.

The trade itself was reportedly agreed to on June 30. Leonard would go back to the Raptors, while the Clippers would receive Brandon Ingram, Gradey Dick, a 2027 first-round pick swap, unprotected first-rounders in 2031 and 2033, and two second-round picks. For now, the teams are waiting because Toronto does not want to absorb unknown contract or penalty risk before the investigation closes.

That is the key distinction. The deal has not been declared dead, and the Clippers have denied wrongdoing. But until the league finishes the outside-counsel review, Leonard's second Raptors chapter is stuck in procedural limbo.
