The Knicks did not just steal Game 1 of the NBA Finals. They dragged San Antonio into a type of game the Spurs had avoided for months.
New York beat the Spurs 105-95 on Wednesday night, and the number that jumped out on Reddit afterward was simple: San Antonio had scored at least 100 points in 40 straight games before this one. The last team to keep the Spurs below 100 was also the Knicks, back on March 1 in a 114-89 New York win.
That makes Game 1 feel less like a random cold night and more like a matchup problem. The Spurs still had moments, and they built a 14-point second-half lead, but the Knicks kept the game physical enough to make every possession feel heavier late.
Karl-Anthony Towns and Mitchell Robinson gave New York real size around Victor Wembanyama, while the wings did enough work at the point of attack to slow San Antonio's drives. The Spurs still found some open threes, so this was not a perfect defensive tape. It was, however, the kind of tape that gives Mike Brown a real Game 2 foundation.
For San Antonio, the adjustment is obvious and uncomfortable: the Finals are not going to let the offense breathe the same way every night. For New York, the message is cleaner. If the Knicks can keep turning this series into a half-court fight, the Spurs' scoring streak ending might be more than trivia.
