James Wiseman is getting a camp shot with the defending champions.
The Knicks have signed the former No. 2 overall pick to an Exhibit 9 deal, according to Michael Scotto. The contract puts Wiseman in New York's training-camp mix, but it does not guarantee him a regular-season roster spot.
That distinction matters. New York has also added Bruce Brown, Ochai Agbaji, John Konchar and Drew Eubanks, setting up a direct competition for the back end of the roster.
The New York Post reported that the Knicks have 13 standard NBA contracts and can add one more while staying under the second apron. A 15th spot would likely require another cap-clearing move, so the immediate fight is for No. 14.
Wiseman brings size and pedigree. He went second in the 2020 draft, but injuries and uneven development kept him from becoming a stable rotation center with Golden State, Detroit or Indiana.
For the Knicks, this is a low-risk look. If Wiseman shows enough in camp, he can push Eubanks for the extra-big role. If not, New York can treat the signing as a true tryout.
