Mannix Says ESPN Swallowed Clippers' Kawhi Spin

Adam Silver speaking as media reaction continues around the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard case
Summary

Chris Mannix criticized ESPN's Clippers reporting after the NBA's strong pushback and later discipline in the Kawhi Leonard case.

Chris Mannix did not soften his criticism of ESPN's Clippers reporting.

Speaking on a podcast segment shared on Reddit, Mannix said he contacted people in the NBA league office after the league strongly denied an ESPN story tied to the Clippers and Kawhi Leonard investigation. His read: if the NBA pushed back that hard, it had to be “more than semantics.”

Mannix said league sources told him there were “real, substantive issues with that reporting,” even though they would not tell him what punishment was coming. After the NBA hit the Clippers with major penalties, he said those concerns had been right.

Then came the sharper line. “I like our colleagues over at ESPN,” Mannix said, “but they just swallowed a big bunch of bullshit that came from the Clippers.”

He added that he usually avoids media-on-media criticism because reporting is difficult. Still, Mannix said a story like that cannot run without getting “a semblance of the picture from the other side.”

The quote landed because this Clippers case is now a credibility fight as much as a cap case. Mannix's criticism turns attention back toward how the Clippers-friendly version reached a national audience.
