The Jonathan Kuminga rumor mill now has one less clean Lakers path to work with.
Marc Stein reported that league sources familiar with the teams' dynamic have repeatedly said the Lakers and Hawks never held meaningful discussions on a sign-and-trade framework that would have sent Kuminga to Los Angeles for Jarred Vanderbilt and a 2032 first-round pick swap.
That matters because the proposed structure had become one of the cleaner public versions of a Lakers pursuit. Stein's reporting cuts against that framing. It does not say Los Angeles is out on Kuminga, but it does lower the temperature on one specific package that was being treated like a live construction site.
The contract side remains just as important. Kuminga is reportedly not looking to be boxed into a three-year deal below what he sees as his market value, which is a key issue because sign-and-trade rules require a three-year contract structure. The Lakers would still like him as a starting small forward, but only on their terms.
There is also still outside pressure. Cleveland has not gone away, and Stein noted optimism from Kuminga's side that more movement and earning potential could open as the offseason continues.
For the Lakers, the takeaway is simple enough. Interest is real. The Vanderbilt-and-swap route, at least as reported by Stein, was not.
