Peyton Watson

Watson is a long, athletic wing who reached the NBA through a first-round selection in 2022 after a brief stint at UCLA. Drafted by the Oklahoma City Thunder, he was immediately traded to the Denver Nuggets in exchange for JaMychal Green and draft capital. He spent his rookie season as a developmental project, logging limited minutes while the Nuggets advanced to the NBA title.

Born on September 11, 2002, Watson grew up in Long Beach, California, and attended Long Beach Polytechnic High School. He joined the varsity team as a freshman and eventually became a leading scorer, averaging 23.2 points and eight rebounds as a junior while earning Moore League MVP honors. He was named to the McDonald's All-American, Jordan Brand Classic, and Nike Hoop Summit rosters.

Rated a consensus five-star recruit and the top prospect from California in the 2021 class, Watson committed to UCLA on July 27, 2020. He arrived as a one-and-done candidate on a team returning all five starters from a Final Four run. His freshman season in 2021–22 was limited by conditioning issues and sporadic playing time; he averaged 3.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in 12.6 minutes per game and earned honorable mention Pac-12 All-Freshman recognition.

The Thunder selected Watson 30th overall in the 2022 NBA draft and traded him to Denver along with two future second-round picks. The Nuggets viewed him as a long-term developmental piece with a wide wingspan, projecting time with the Grand Rapids Gold of the G League. During his rookie campaign, he appeared in 23 games, averaging 3.3 points and 1.6 rebounds, and ended the season with an NBA championship ring after Denver defeated Miami in the Finals.

Watson expanded his role in subsequent seasons. He played 80 games for Denver in 2023–24, averaging 6.7 points and 3.2 rebounds, and then 68 games in 2024–25 with averages of 8.1 points and 3.4 rebounds. On November 19, 2025, he posted career highs of 32 points and 12 rebounds against New Orleans. He was named Western Conference Player of the Week in January 2026 after averaging 24.5 points, eight rebounds, and four assists, and later scored a career-best 35 points against Washington.

Watson's on-court identity centers on length, defensive versatility, and transition finishing.
