Adou Thiero

Thiero is an American guard who reached the NBA through a second-round selection in the 2025 draft, eventually landing with the Los Angeles Lakers via trade. His college career spanned three seasons across Kentucky and Arkansas, with a standout senior year that saw him lead the Razorbacks in scoring. His background includes Malian heritage, parents who played Division I basketball, and a decorated high school career in western Pennsylvania.

Born on May 8, 2004, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Thiero spent his early childhood in Mali with his grandmother while his parents pursued college basketball careers in the United States. His father, Almamy, played at Memphis under John Calipari and later at Duquesne. His mother, Mariam, played at Oklahoma City and was selected by the Washington Mystics in the 2006 WNBA draft. In 2007, Thiero returned to the U.S. at age three.

He attended Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale, Pennsylvania, where he played basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. As a sophomore, he led the basketball team in scoring at 17.7 points per game. His junior numbers rose to 21.8 points, 5.1 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks per contest. As a senior, he averaged 23.3 points, 10.3 rebounds, 5.9 assists, 3.9 steals, and 2.3 blocks, leading Quaker Valley to a 27–1 record with an undefeated league mark. The team—s only loss came in the PIAA championship game. He set a school record with 44 points in a single game and finished third in program history with 1,624 career points. He was named WPIAL Player of the Year, TribLive HSSN Boys Basketball Player of the Year, and Pennsylvania Class 4A Player of the Year.

Thiero committed to Kentucky, reuniting with John Calipari, who had coached his father at Memphis. As a freshman in 2022–23, he appeared in 20 games, averaging 9.5 minutes and contributing 2.3 points and 1.9 rebounds. He led the Wildcats in steals in four games and blocks in three games. In 2023–24, he started 19 of 25 appearances, averaging 7.2 points and five rebounds per game. He recorded 27 blocks, second on the team, and grabbed a double-double of 16 points and 13 rebounds against No. 1 ranked Kansas.

After the 2023–24 season, Thiero entered the 2024 NBA draft and the NCAA transfer portal. He withdrew from the draft and followed Calipari to Arkansas, spending the 2024–25 season with the Razorbacks. He led the team in scoring at 15.1 points per game despite missing ten games due to injury. Arkansas finished 22–14 and reached the Sweet 16 of the 2025 NCAA tournament. Thiero then declared for the 2025 NBA draft and was chosen 36th overall by the Brooklyn Nets, who traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers as part of a seven-team deal involving Kevin Durant.

On the court, Thiero is a combo guard with size, defensive activity, and slashing ability. He handles the ball well enough to initiate offense but also moves effectively off the ball. His steal and block totals at both the high school and college levels reflect anticipatory instincts and length. At Kentucky, his rebounding numbers for a guard stood out, particularly against elite opponents. His offensive game centers on drives, transition finishes, and developing perimeter shooting. As a Laker, he recovers from knee surgery sustained before the season.
