Taj Gibson

Gibson is an American forward whose NBA career has spanned more than a decade and multiple franchises since he was selected in the first round of the 2009 draft. A steady interior presence known for energy, defense, and rebounding, he has transitioned from starter to respected veteran reserve.

Born Taj Jami Gibson on June 24, 1985, in Brooklyn, New York, he attended P.S. 67 Charles A. Dorsey School in Fort Greene. He began high school at Brooklyn's High School of Telecommunication Arts and Technology, then attended Stoneridge Prep in Tarzana, California, as a sophomore and junior. During his senior year in 2006, he attended Calvary Christian in San Fernando, California.

Gibson played at the University of Southern California, where he was named to the Pac-10 All-Freshman team and helped USC beat rival UCLA in 2008. He was named to the 2009 All-Pac-10 Tournament Team as the Trojans won the conference championship at Staples Center. He declared for the 2009 NBA draft and was selected 26th overall by the Chicago Bulls.

Gibson was the starting power forward for most of his rookie season and impressed with his high energy and defense. He played in the Rookie Challenge during All-Star Weekend and was selected to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. The Bulls made the playoffs as the eighth seed, and Gibson averaged 7.6 points and 7.0 rebounds in a first-round loss to Cleveland.

In 2010, the Bulls signed Carlos Boozer, and Gibson moved into a bench role. He was selected as a starter for the Sophomore squad in the 2011 Rising Stars challenge. In May 2012, he was named to the US Select Team, practicing with the US Olympic Team alongside Jeremy Lin, DeMarcus Cousins, and Kyrie Irving. In 2013–14, he averaged 13 points and 6.8 rebounds and finished second in Sixth Man of the Year voting. He underwent ankle surgery in June 2015.

Gibson has also played for the Oklahoma City Thunder, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks, Washington Wizards, Detroit Pistons, Charlotte Hornets, and Memphis Grizzlies. He continues his career as a veteran interior presence who provides rebounding, defense, and leadership in reserve minutes.
