Rudy Gobert

Gobert is a French center whose NBA career has been defined by elite rim protection and defensive accolades since he was drafted in 2013. Standing 7 ft 1 in with a record-setting wingspan, he has anchored defenses for the Utah Jazz and Minnesota Timberwolves while earning multiple Defensive Player of the Year awards and All-Star selections.

Born Rudy Gobert-Bourgarel on June 26, 1992, in Saint-Quentin, France, he is the son of Rudy Bourgarel, who played college basketball at Marist and professionally in Paris and Saint-Quentin. Gobert began playing basketball in 2003 for JSC St-Quentin and later joined Saint-Quentin BB club. In 2007, he entered the Cholet Basket training center.

Gobert played for the Cholet junior team from 2009 to 2011 and appeared in one senior-team game in 2010–11. In 2011–12, he averaged 4.2 points and 3.6 rebounds in 29 games for Cholet. The following season, he raised his averages to 8.4 points and 5.4 rebounds in 27 games. He declared for the 2013 NBA draft and set combine records for wingspan and standing reach, earning him the nickname "The Stifle Tower."

The Denver Nuggets selected Gobert 27th overall in the 2013 NBA draft and traded him to the Utah Jazz on draft night. He signed his rookie-scale contract with Utah on July 6, 2013. He emerged as a defensive anchor, leading the NBA in blocks during the 2016–17 season and in rebounds during the 2021–22 season. He has been named to the All-NBA Second Team and multiple All-NBA Third Teams.

Gobert has won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award four times, tying the record shared by Dikembe Mutombo and Ben Wallace. He is an eight-time All-Defensive First Team selection and a three-time NBA All-Star. In 2022, the Jazz traded him to the Minnesota Timberwolves. In 2021, he was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team.

In March 2020, Gobert became the first NBA player to test positive for COVID-19, prompting the league to postpone the 2019–20 season.

Gobert functions as a drop-coverage center with elite shot-blocking timing, rebounding presence, and vertical spacing on offense. His wingspan and standing reach make him one of the most impactful interior defenders in modern NBA history. His offensive game centers on pick-and-roll finishing, lob threats, and putbacks around the rim.
