Marcus Smart

Smart is an American guard widely regarded as one of the best perimeter defenders of his generation. Drafted sixth overall in 2014, he spent eight seasons in Boston, evolving from an energetic bench player into the team's starting point guard and defensive anchor. In 2022, he became only the second point guard after Gary Payton to win the NBA Defensive Player of the Year award.

Born Marcus Osmond Smart on March 6, 1994, in Flower Mound, Texas, he attended Edward S. Marcus High School, where he averaged 15.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, and 5.0 assists as a senior. He achieved a record of 115-6 through three seasons and was a two-time 5A state champion. He was named a McDonald's All-American and set a Team USA U18 record for steals with 18 during the 2012 FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Brazil.

Smart played two seasons at Oklahoma State. As a freshman, he averaged 15.4 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3.0 steals per game, leading the Big 12 in steals with 99. He initially declared for the 2013 NBA draft but returned for his sophomore season. His 99 steals set a Big 12 freshman record.

The Boston Celtics selected Smart with the sixth overall pick in the 2014 NBA draft. He came off the bench for his first four seasons before becoming the starting point guard in 2018. He helped the Celtics reach the NBA Finals in 2022. After eight seasons, he was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in 2023. Injury struggles in Memphis led to a trade to the Washington Wizards in 2025, and he signed a two-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers in July 2025 after a buyout.

Smart is a defensive leader with elite on-ball pressure, toughness, and versatility. He guards multiple positions, communicates constantly, and sets the tone for his team's defense. Offensively, he is a playmaker who attacks the rim, draws fouls, and has improved his three-point shooting over time.
