The Buss family fight over the Lakers now has a public counterstatement.
After Jeanie Buss' attorney made clear she would oppose a sale of the family's remaining stake, Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss issued a joint response saying they are still united. The group said the Lakers have been "one of the greatest privileges" of their lives, but that they have made the decision to sell the family's remaining 17.8% ownership stake.
The statement, shared through Shams Charania and posted on Reddit, framed the move as a careful process. The siblings said their focus is on what they believe is best for the Lakers, the fan base and Los Angeles. They also said they have "tremendous respect" for Bob Iger and Josh Kushner and believe the new group understands what the franchise represents.
That does not settle the dispute. Jeanie's side has argued that she did not agree to the sale and that any move involving the trust must follow the proper approval process. The five siblings are saying the opposite in public: they intend to move forward.
The next question is whether this stays as a business disagreement or becomes a legal fight over the franchise's final Buss-family shares.
