Jeanie Buss is trying to stop the next piece of the Lakers sale from moving without her.
CNBC reported that Buss is opposing a potential sale of her family's remaining stake in the Lakers to Bob Iger and Joshua Kushner, contradicting earlier reporting that the family had voted to move forward. In a letter to law firms representing Jim, Johnny, Janie, Joey and Jesse Buss, attorney Adam Streisand wrote that Jeanie has not agreed to sell and that any vote saying the Buss family is selling "would be and is void."
The legal argument is built around control. Streisand says Jeanie Buss remains the Lakers' controlling shareholder under a 2017 court order, and that no sale can happen without her consent. A person familiar with the matter told CNBC that Buss does not want to sell the family's stake at this time.
Iger and Kushner agreed last week to buy Mark Walter's majority stake in the franchise. CNBC reported that deal valued the Lakers at $12.5 billion. The new fight is over whether the Buss family's 17.8% piece can follow that sale, or whether Jeanie can keep it locked in place.
