Keyonte George will not get his one-game coaching cameo with the Jazz after all.
The NBA has informed Utah that George cannot serve in an official coaching role during Thursday's Las Vegas Summer League game against the Washington Wizards, according to Sarah Todd of the Deseret News. The call came after the league reviewed the idea and leaned on precedent for active players.
George was not set to be paid, and the role had been framed as a single-game volunteer spot. The plan grew out of a practice moment after George drew up a successful play and the joke about adding him to the staff became real.
Utah assistant Steve Wojciechowski had praised George's involvement with the younger players. But the league decided compensation was not the only issue. An active NBA player still cannot step into an official coaching seat, even for Summer League.
The Jazz-Wizards game already has attention because of Darryn Peterson and AJ Dybantsa. George's blocked role adds a different layer: a fun development idea ran into the NBA's need to keep its rules consistent.
