AJ Dybantsa is not easing into the expectations around his name.
Speaking on 7PM in Brooklyn with Carmelo Anthony, Dybantsa said he believes Utah and Washington already have enough on their rosters to make a quick jump if they add him. His phrasing was bold. He said either team could "automatically be a playoff team" with him as a rookie.
That is the kind of line that travels before the draft. Dybantsa is widely discussed as a top prospect, and Utah and Washington are both in the kind of roster stage where one high-end creator can change the tone of a rebuild.
He also sounded comfortable with the pressure attached to being viewed that way. Dybantsa said he has "been number one" his whole life and grew up with attention already on him. His response was not to lower the bar. It was to keep playing through mistakes.
The more interesting part was how he described development. Dybantsa pointed to his reads from the first game of his season compared with the last game and said the difference was "night and day." He framed an 82-game NBA season, film work with a dedicated coach and full gym access as chances to stack smaller wins.
His example was simple: maybe the early-season numbers are around 15, five and five, then by the end they look more like 26 and seven. It was not a formal prediction as much as a look into how quickly he thinks he can process and improve.
Dybantsa also connected that confidence to his family background. He said his mother is from Jamaica, his father is from Congo, and both worked to raise three children after coming to the United States. He described work ethic as something inherited, not something he had to discover.
The playoff line will get the attention. The full answer was more layered: confidence, plus a belief that growth comes quickly when the environment is built around work.
