Trae Young is moving toward a long-term stay with the Wizards.
Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Young intends to sign a four-year, approximately $212 million deal with Washington. The contract is expected to include a player option in the fourth year.
Young declined his $49 million player option before free agency. In this case, that did not point him away from the Wizards. It cleared the way for a bigger, longer agreement with the team that landed him in January.
The deal is not the full maximum Young could have received from Washington, according to the report. It is, however, equal to the max he could have signed with another franchise.
Charania also reported that the agreement was reached with Young's CAA representation group, including Aaron Mintz, Ray Young, Andrew Morrison and Austin Brown.
The basketball part is clear enough. Washington is treating Young as the organizer for a young roster it wants to push forward, and Young is signaling that D.C. is where he wants that next chapter to happen.
