Trae Young is headed toward free agency.
Marc J. Spears reported that Young plans to decline his $48.97 million player option for the 2026-27 season and become a free agent on Monday. Washington remains the front runner, according to Spears, because Young loves the Wizards and the city.
That does not mean the negotiation is settled. Spears also reported that Young still expects max interest from multiple teams, giving him a reason to test the market instead of taking the option.
The situation now shifts to Washington's offer. If the Wizards want to keep the four-time All-Star guard, they may have to do it at a number shaped by outside bidders.
Young's expected decision keeps him in control of the process. He can listen, measure the market and still return to Washington if the deal lines up.
