The Lakers optimism is not just about names. It is about fit around Luka Doncic.
A detailed Lakers Reddit thread, built off a video breakdown, argued that Los Angeles has finally shaped the roster around Doncic's strengths instead of simply stacking talent. The main point was straightforward: give Luka a real rim-running center, keep enough shooting on the floor, and let Austin Reaves handle more creation when Doncic sits.
Walker Kessler is the swing piece in that argument. The thread framed him as the addition who changes the geometry of the team because of his rim protection, screening and lob finishing. For a Lakers group that struggled to protect the rim last season, Kessler gives JJ Redick a cleaner defensive backstop and gives Doncic a vertical target in pick-and-roll.
The offensive case is easier to see. Doncic with a dive big and shooters is a proven formula. Reaves can still work as a secondary creator, then shift into a heavier on-ball role during non-Luka minutes. That matters over 48 minutes, especially if Los Angeles wants to avoid long scoring droughts whenever Doncic rests.
The thread also pointed to Quentin Grimes as a cleaner fit than his recent reputation suggests. In Los Angeles, the idea is not to ask him to create too much. It is to return him to a simpler 3-and-D role, guard point-of-attack players, space the floor and keep the ball moving.
There are still obvious questions. Lakers fans in the comments kept coming back to the same two holes: another defensive wing and a backup center. Some liked the new balance, but several argued the team is not a true contender unless it finds someone who can guard bigger forwards for real playoff minutes.
That is the line Redick has to manage. The roster may make more sense around Doncic now, and Kessler can clean up a lot of defensive problems near the rim. But perimeter size is still the stress point.
The Lakers do look more coherent on paper. The next step is turning that fit into lineups that survive when the matchup gets bigger, stronger and slower in the playoffs.
