Quinn Cook added a new layer to an old Warriors debate.
Cook said on The Panel that Kevin Durant badly wanted Stephen Curry to win Finals MVP in 2018, even while Golden State was closing in on another title. According to Cook, Durant talked about it through the season and wanted Curry to get the award so the noise around his Finals resume would finally quiet down.
"To be honest, Kevin wanted Steph to win the finals MVP," Cook said. "That's all he was talking about all season."
Cook pointed to Game 2, when Curry broke the Finals record for made 3-pointers, as the moment that seemed to set it up. Then Game 3 changed the math. Curry struggled, Golden State needed scoring, and Durant delivered the night that swung the vote.
"Kevin just accidentally walked into 40-whatever," Cook said. He also noted that Durant followed it with a triple-double in Game 4 and still was not forcing the issue.
Nick Young said Curry's head was down after a win and that Durant was trying to give him the moment.
The series ended in a sweep, and Durant was named Finals MVP again. Cook's version does not change the result. It explains why the Warriors seemed to know Curry wanted that one badly.
