Russell Westbrook's exit now has a little more shape around it.
Marc Stein reported that the Washington Wizards made Westbrook a two-year offer to return to the franchise. According to Stein, league sources said Westbrook was the side that ended those talks after balking at the specific terms of the deal and/or the role Washington had available.
The same theme reportedly applied in Sacramento. Jake Fischer previously revealed the Kings' interest in bringing Westbrook back for another season, but the reduced role behind lottery pick Darius Acuff Jr. did not appeal to him compared with the role he held last season.
That distinction matters. Westbrook was not simply left without a market. He had paths to keep playing, including a return to Washington, where he averaged a triple-double in 2020-21. The issue was whether those paths matched how he wanted to spend year 19.
Instead, the 37-year-old chose to stop playing. For a former MVP and one of the most forceful guards of his generation, the final decision appears to have been less about chasing one more contract and more about refusing a version of the job that no longer fit.
