Russell Westbrook

Westbrook is an American guard who has established himself as one of the most statistically productive players in NBA history since entering the league in 2008. Drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics before their relocation to Oklahoma City, he has played for multiple franchises and earned MVP, scoring, and assists titles while redefining the triple-double in the modern era.

Born Russell Westbrook III on November 12, 1988, in Long Beach, California, he grew up in Hawthorne. He attended Leuzinger High School, where he entered as a 5 ft 8 point guard and did not start on varsity until his junior year. He attained his adult height of 6 ft 3 before his senior season, averaging 25.1 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.1 steals, and 2.3 assists. He recorded 14 double-doubles and scored a career-best 51 points in January 2006.

Westbrook played two seasons at UCLA and earned third-team All-Pac-10 honors. The Seattle SuperSonics selected him fourth overall in the 2008 NBA draft; the team relocated to Oklahoma City that same week. He spent 11 seasons with the Thunder, becoming the franchise's all-time leading scorer and appearing in the 2012 NBA Finals against Miami.

In 2019, the Thunder traded Westbrook to the Houston Rockets. He played one season in Houston before moving to the Washington Wizards in 2020. After leading the league in assists in Washington, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in 2021. He later moved to the Los Angeles Clippers, then was traded to Utah and waived in 2024 before signing with the Denver Nuggets. He joined the Sacramento Kings for the 2025–26 season.

Westbrook is a nine-time NBA All-Star, a nine-time All-NBA Team member, and a two-time All-Star Game MVP. He won the 2016–17 MVP award after averaging a triple-double, joining Oscar Robertson as the only players to do so at the time. He has since accomplished the feat three more times and holds the NBA record for career triple-doubles. He was named to the NBA 75th Anniversary Team in 2021.

Westbrook has also represented the United States, winning gold at the 2010 FIBA World Championship and the 2012 London Olympics. He wears a "KB3" wristband in memory of his childhood friend and basketball teammate Khelcey Barrs III, who died in 2004.

Westbrook functions as an explosive, downhill point guard with elite athleticism, rebounding instincts, and playmaking vision. His career has been defined by relentless energy, statistical volume, and the ability to impact every facet of the box score.
