Spencer Jones is staying with the Nuggets, and he wanted the business side understood.
Jones posted on LinkedIn after Denver matched the offer sheet he signed with the Oklahoma City Thunder, writing: "It's official. I'm staying a Denver Nugget. Plot twist." He knew fans were confused, even upset, that he signed with a rival before returning to Denver.
His explanation was direct. "This is a business," Jones wrote. "Front offices treat it that way every day and players have to do the same."
Jones said he entered free agency looking for a team that fit his skill set, a championship culture and an organization he believed in. In his view, both Denver and Oklahoma City checked those boxes, so the offer sheet secured the right outcome either way.
"The offer sheet was a business decision," Jones wrote. "It ensured I ended up in the right situation w/ what I felt was the right compensation regardless of what happened next."
Jones also pointed to the history attached to the deal, calling it the largest fully guaranteed offer sheet ever signed by an undrafted player converted from a two-way contract. Denver keeps the player it developed, and Jones stays with the team that first bet on him.
