Underdog has received a cease-and-desist demand tied to a promotion that mocked Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s foul-drawing style, according to reporting by The Athletic.
The letter, dated May 22, 2026 and cited in the report, was sent by attorney Eric Fishman of ArentFox Schiff LLP on behalf of Gilgeous-Alexander. It reportedly demands a permanent stop to use of SGA’s name, image, or likeness across web pages, apps, social posts, paid marketing materials, and physical promotional goods connected to the campaign.
The promotion at issue included an ‘Operation’-style concept branded as ‘Unethical Hoops’, with a Game 3 giveaway tied to 100 copies. The legal request also reportedly sought destruction of existing game units and removal of NIL-linked references without authorization.
What is confirmed: a formal legal notice was sent and its scope is broad across digital and physical channels. What remains unclear publicly: whether a settlement path, content takedown sequence, or further litigation steps are already in motion.
Bottom line: this is a notable NIL enforcement case at the intersection of sports betting-adjacent marketing, parody boundaries, and athlete commercial rights control.
