Bobby Portis

Portis is an American forward who has built a solid NBA career as a scoring big man with three-level offensive ability and a championship pedigree. Drafted 22nd overall by the Chicago Bulls in 2015, he spent four seasons in Chicago before moving to Washington, New York, and eventually Milwaukee, where he won an NBA title in 2021. His energetic style, outside shooting, and rebounding have made him a valuable rotation player and fan favorite.

Born Bobby Portis Jr. on February 10, 1995, he grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and attended Hall High School. He was a highly decorated prep player, earning McDonald's and Parade All-American honors and being named Mr. Basketball of Arkansas in 2013. Upon committing to Arkansas, he became the first in-state McDonald's All-American to sign with the Razorbacks since Corliss Williamson in 1992.

Portis played two seasons at Arkansas under coach Mike Anderson. As a freshman, he averaged 12.3 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and second-team All-SEC. As a sophomore, he averaged 17.5 points, 8.9 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.2 assists, and 1.1 steals. He was named one of 20 finalists for the John R. Wooden Award and was selected as the SEC Player of the Year by the league's coaches on March 10, 2015. He was the first Razorback to win the award since Corliss Williamson.

The Chicago Bulls selected Portis with the 22nd overall pick in the 2015 NBA draft. He signed his rookie scale contract on July 7 and made his NBA debut on November 3, scoring 10 points against Charlotte. On December 19, 2015, he scored 20 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in a win over the New York Knicks. He had a career-high 22 points on March 18, 2017, against Utah.

Portis's Chicago tenure was marked by inconsistency and controversy. On October 17, 2017, he was involved in a physical altercation with teammate Nikola Mirotić during practice, punching Mirotić in the face and causing a concussion and multiple facial fractures. Portis was suspended for eight games. After the incident, he struggled to regain a consistent role and was traded to the Washington Wizards in 2019. He later played for the New York Knicks before signing with the Milwaukee Bucks.

With Milwaukee, Portis found a stable role as a scoring big off the bench. He won his first NBA championship in 2021 and re-signed with the Bucks on a multi-year deal. His ability to stretch the floor, score inside, and bring energy has made him a key contributor to a championship core built around Giannis Antetokounmpo and Khris Middleton.

Portis is a versatile forward with a smooth shooting stroke, a high motor, and a willingness to score from all three levels. He operates effectively in the post, faces up from the elbows, and has extended his range to the three-point line. His rebounding is above average for his size, particularly on the offensive glass. Defensively, he is active but not a rim protector; his value lies in scoring bursts, spacing, and energy. His fiery on-court demeanor and enthusiastic bench celebrations have made him a fan favorite in Milwaukee.

Portis enters the 2025–26 season with the Milwaukee Bucks. His résumé includes an SEC Player of the Year award, consensus second-team All-American honors, a first-round draft selection, an NBA championship in 2021, and a journeyman career that took him from Chicago to Washington to New York and finally to a long-term role in Milwaukee. His path from Little Rock through Arkansas and into the NBA reflects a player who maximized his offensive skill set and found a home as a valuable bench contributor on a championship team.
