Profile

About Monte Morris

Morris is an American point guard who has built a professional career on elite decision-making, low-turnover play, and steady leadership. Drafted in the second round in 2017 after a record-setting college career at Iowa State, he has served as a reliable backup and occasional starter across multiple NBA franchises.

Born Monté Robert Morris on June 27, 1995, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he grew up in Flint and attended Flint Beecher High School. He was childhood friends with future NBA teammate Kyle Kuzma. Morris was a four-year starter and led the Buccaneers in scoring, assists, and steals in all four seasons. He led Beecher to back-to-back Class C Michigan state titles in 2012 and 2013 and was named Michigan's Mr. Basketball in 2013. He was ranked No. 96 by Rivals.com and committed to Iowa State.

At Iowa State, Morris started on the bench but worked his way into the starting lineup as a freshman. He averaged 6.8 points, 3.7 assists, and 2.6 rebounds and broke the NCAA record with a 4.79 assist-to-turnover ratio. As a sophomore, he averaged 11.9 points, 5.2 assists, and 3.4 rebounds and earned All-Big 12 Second Team honors. He finished his career as one of the most efficient point guards in college basketball history, holding the NCAA record for career assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Denver Nuggets selected Morris with the 51st overall pick in 2017. He spent five seasons in Denver, primarily as a backup to Jamal Murray, and was traded to the Washington Wizards in 2022. He later played for the Detroit Pistons, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Phoenix Suns, continuing his role as a steadying veteran presence.

Morris is a pass-first point guard with elite court vision and one of the best assist-to-turnover ratios in the league. He operates pick-and-roll actions with patience, rarely forces plays, and keeps the offense flowing. He is not a high-volume scorer but provides mid-range shooting, transition passing, and defensive discipline. His leadership and experience have made him a valued backup across multiple rosters.
