Injuries limited Vanderbilt to just 14 games at Kentucky. He averaged 5.9 points and 7.9 rebounds in 17.0 minutes per game before declaring for the 2018 NBA draft. The Orlando Magic selected him with the 41st overall pick and traded him to the Denver Nuggets, where he signed on July 11, 2018. He made his NBA debut on January 25, 2019, and was later assigned to the Rio Grande Valley Vipers of the G League.
On February 5, 2020, the Nuggets traded Vanderbilt to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He re-signed with Minnesota in September 2021 and started 67 games during the 2021-22 season, averaging career highs of 6.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 1.3 steals per game. On July 6, 2022, he was traded to the Utah Jazz as part of the Rudy Gobert deal. On February 9, 2023, Utah traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers. He signed a four-year, million contract extension with the Lakers in September 2023 and won the inaugural NBA In-Season Tournament with the team on December 9, 2023.
Vanderbilt is an energetic forward who thrives on defense, rebounding, and transition play. He uses his length and motor to guard multiple positions, crash the offensive glass, and generate steals and deflections. His offensive game is limited to cuts, putbacks, and occasional short rolls, but his defensive impact and rebounding energy make him a situational contributor for teams needing frontcourt toughness.
Vanderbilt enters each season as a defensive specialist and energy player for the Lakers, carrying the distinction of an In-Season Tournament title and a four-year guaranteed contract. His trajectory from an injury-shortened college career to a key rotation piece on a contending team reflects resilience, defensive IQ, and a willingness to embrace a role built on hustle and physicality.
