Amir Coffey

Coffey is an American wing with six seasons of NBA experience, primarily with the Los Angeles Clippers, before a 2026 trade sent him to the Phoenix Suns. He broke into the league as an undrafted free agent on a two-way contract, gradually earned a standard deal, and developed into a reliable rotation player capable of spot-starting and defending multiple positions. His family basketball lineage includes a father who played in the NBA and a sister who was selected fifth overall in the WNBA draft.

Born on June 17, 1997, Coffey attended Hopkins High School in Minnetonka, Minnesota. As a senior, he averaged 19.9 points and earned Minnesota Mr. Basketball honors, Associated Press State Player of the Year, and Star Tribune Metro Player of the Year. Ranked 32nd overall in ESPN's class of 2016 top 100, he committed to the University of Minnesota in September 2015. He also scored seven points with two assists and two rebounds at the 2016 Jordan Brand Classic.

Coffey played three seasons for the Minnesota Golden Gophers. As a freshman, he averaged 12.2 points and 3.1 assists and earned Big Ten All-Freshman Team honors. As a junior, he was named to the All-Big Ten Third Team by both coaches and media. After going undrafted in the 2019 NBA draft, he signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Clippers.

During his rookie campaign in 2019–20, Coffey made 18 appearances and averaged 3.2 points, 0.9 rebounds, and 0.8 assists. On August 14, 2020, he scored 21 points with four steals in a 107–103 overtime win over the Oklahoma City Thunder. In 2020–21, he appeared in 44 games and averaged 3.2 points, 1.0 rebound, and 0.5 assists. He signed another two-way deal in September 2021 and was converted to a standard contract on March 26, 2022. In the 2021–22 season, he made 69 appearances, including 30 starts, and averaged 9.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.8 assists. He set career highs of 32 points on April 1, 2022, against Milwaukee and 35 points on April 10 against Oklahoma City.

In July 2022, Coffey re-signed with the Clippers on a three-year, million contract. He played 50 games in 2022–23, starting nine, and averaged 3.4 points, 1.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. In 2023–24, he made 70 appearances with 13 starts and averaged 6.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. The following season, he made 72 appearances with another 13 starts and averaged 9.7 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.1 assists. In August 2025, he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, appeared in 30 games, and was traded to the Phoenix Suns on February 5, 2026, in a three-team deal involving the Chicago Bulls.

Coffey is a versatile wing with size, defensive switchability, and a developing outside shot. He scores efficiently in catch-and-shoot situations, attacks closeouts, and finishes in transition. His primary offensive value comes from timely cutting, spot-up shooting, and the ability to guard opposing wings and forwards. He is not a high-usage isolation scorer but thrives in structured offenses where he can move off the ball and make quick decisions. His length and lateral mobility allow him to guard multiple positions, though he is most effective against wings rather than quick guards or powerful big men.

Coffey enters the 2025–26 season as a Phoenix Sun after six seasons with the Clippers and a brief Milwaukee stop.
