Nic Claxton

Claxton is an American center who has developed into one of the most efficient defensive bigs in the NBA since being drafted by the Brooklyn Nets in 2019. Known for his shot-blocking, switching ability, and elite field goal percentage, he became the Nets' starting center in 2022 and signed a four-year, $100 million contract in 2024.

Born Nicolas Devir Claxton on April 17, 1999, in Greenville, South Carolina, he attended Legacy Charter School, where he averaged 17.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 2.9 blocks per game as a senior and became the fourth player in school history to record 1,000 career points. He was a three-star recruit and committed to Georgia over Baylor, Florida State, NC State, and South Carolina.

Claxton was selected with the 31st overall pick by the Brooklyn Nets in the 2019 NBA draft. He made his NBA debut on November 8, 2019, with eight points and six rebounds against the Portland Trail Blazers. He suffered a hamstring injury in January 2020 and underwent arthroscopic labrum repair surgery on his left shoulder in June 2020, missing the remainder of the 2019-20 season.

Heading into the 2020-21 season, the Nets traded Jarrett Allen to create more minutes for Claxton. He made his playoff debut on May 22, 2021, and helped Brooklyn defeat Boston in the first round. In 2021-22, the Nets traded DeAndre Jordan and named Claxton the starting center. On February 2, 2022, he scored a season-high 23 points, 11 rebounds, and five blocks against Sacramento.

In 2022-23, Claxton led the NBA in field goal percentage at 70.5 percent and averaged 2.5 blocks per game, finishing second to Jaren Jackson Jr. in blocks and ninth in Defensive Player of the Year voting. On January 26, 2023, he scored a career-high 27 points with 13 rebounds and two blocks against Detroit. On July 6, 2024, he re-signed with the Nets on a four-year, $100 million contract.

Claxton is a mobile center with elite defensive versatility, allowing him to switch onto perimeter players while protecting the rim. His timing and length make him a prolific shot blocker, and his efficiency around the rim is among the best in the league. Offensively, he scores almost entirely on dunks, lobs, and putbacks. His development into a starting-caliber center reflects his defensive intelligence and continuous improvement.
