About Jonathan Kuminga

Kuminga is a Congolese forward who entered the NBA as a lottery pick in 2021 after an unconventional path through the NBA G League Ignite. He won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors as a rookie and later moved to the Atlanta Hawks, carrying the pedigree of a top-ranked recruit and a rapid rise through the American basketball system.

Born Jonathan Malangu Kuminga on October 6, 2002, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, he began playing basketball at age two. In 2016, he moved to the United States to play high school basketball. He attended Huntington Prep in West Virginia as a freshman, then transferred to Our Savior New American School in New York, where he averaged 25 points, five rebounds, and five assists as a sophomore. He was named MaxPreps National Sophomore of the Year after scoring 40 points at the Slam Dunk to the Beach showcase.

For his junior season, Kuminga transferred to The Patrick School in New Jersey. On July 15, 2020, he reclassified to the 2020 class and announced that he would bypass college basketball to join the NBA G League Ignite. He was a consensus five-star recruit and the top small forward in the 2021 class. With the Ignite, he averaged 15.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

The Golden State Warriors selected Kuminga with the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He signed with the Warriors on August 3, 2021, and made his NBA debut on October 30. In his first career start on December 18, he scored a then-career-high 26 points. He won an NBA championship with the Warriors in 2022. He later moved to the Atlanta Hawks.

Kuminga is an athletic forward with elite leaping ability, finishing at the rim, and defensive versatility. He attacks in transition, scores on lobs and putbacks, and uses his size to guard multiple positions. His offensive game is expanding to include more mid-range counters and three-point shooting, though his development remains a focus.

Kuminga enters each season as a young forward with lottery-pick pedigree and championship experience. His trajectory from a Congolese youth player to a G League Ignite prospect, a top-seven draft pick, and an NBA champion reflects extraordinary athleticism and a willingness to take an alternative path to the league.
