Ayo Dosunmu

Dosunmu is an American guard who has played for the Minnesota Timberwolves after a decorated college career at Illinois and a second-round selection by the Chicago Bulls in the 2021 NBA draft. He emerged as one of the top Chicago high school prospects of his generation, became a consensus first-team All-American as a junior with the Fighting Illini, and carried a reputation for clutch shot-making and all-around backcourt production into the professional ranks.

Born Quamdeen Ayopo Dosunmu on January 17, 2000, in Chicago, he is the son of a Nigerian father of Yoruba descent and an African American mother. His name Ayo means joy in Yoruba. He began his high school career at Westinghouse College Prep, where he helped lead the Warriors to a 2015 conference championship and scored a season-high 40 points against Crane High School as a freshman. He transferred to Morgan Park after his freshman year. As a junior, he led the Mustangs to an IHSA Class 3A state championship but missed the title game due to injury. As a senior, he led Morgan Park to a second consecutive IHSA Class 3A title, scoring 28 points and breaking the IHSA championship game scoring record. He averaged 25.2 points, 7.4 rebounds, 7.3 assists, and 2.7 steals as a senior and was named a consensus first-team All-State selection by the Associated Press, Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Champaign News-Gazette, and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. He also played in the Jordan Brand Classic and the Iverson Roundball Classic.

Dosunmu verbally committed to Illinois on October 19, 2017, choosing the Illini over Wake Forest at the Jordan Brand Store on State Street in Chicago. As a freshman, he debuted with 18 points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals against Evansville on November 8, 2018. He averaged 13.8 points and 3.3 assists per game and was named to the All-Big Ten Freshman Team, along with honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. As a sophomore, he averaged 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.3 assists and earned First Team All-Big Ten recognition from the media and Second Team from the coaches. He hit a last-second jump shot in a 64–62 win over Michigan on January 25, 2020, finishing with 27 points. He was injured in a February 11 game against Michigan State but returned to score 24 points in a 62–56 win at Penn State. As a junior, he earned consensus first-team All-American honors.

The Chicago Bulls selected Dosunmu with the 38th overall pick in the 2021 NBA draft. He was drafted after three seasons at Illinois that established him as one of the premier guards in the Big Ten. His selection represented the culmination of a Chicago-based career that began at Westinghouse and Morgan Park, continued through Illinois, and entered the professional ranks through the Bulls.

Dosunmu is a versatile guard with playmaking vision, scoring instincts, and defensive versatility. His 7.3 assists per game as a senior in high school reflected a player who impacts every statistical category. At Illinois, he improved as a pick-and-roll operator, mid-range scorer, and clutch shooter. His length and athleticism allow him to guard multiple positions. Offensively, he attacks the rim, uses pull-up jumpers, and facilitates for others. His competitiveness in high-pressure moments was evident in his game-winning shot against Michigan and his record-breaking championship game at Morgan Park.

Dosunmu enters the 2025–26 season with professional experience at the NBA level with the Minnesota Timberwolves. His résumé includes back-to-back IHSA Class 3A titles, an IHSA championship game scoring record, a consensus first-team All-American season at Illinois, a Jordan Brand Classic appearance, and a 38th overall draft selection by the Chicago Bulls. His path from Chicago public league basketball to the Big Ten and into the NBA reflects a developmental arc rooted in local competition, high school championships, and incremental improvement at each stage.
