About Terrence Shannon Jr.

Shannon is an American wing who reached the NBA through the 2024 draft after a winding college career split between Texas Tech and Illinois. Drafted by the Minnesota Timberwolves, he brings explosive athleticism, scoring ability, and a background of overcoming eligibility challenges to the professional level.

Born Terrence Edward Shannon Jr. on July 30, 2000, in Chicago, Illinois, he attended Lincoln Park High School, averaging 15 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.7 assists as a senior. He also played football as a receiver. After receiving no Division I scholarship offers by the end of his senior season, he reclassified to the 2019 class and moved to IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.

Shannon was a four-star recruit who originally committed to DePaul before switching to Texas Tech. As a freshman, he averaged 9.8 points and 4.1 rebounds, earning Big 12 All-Freshman Team honors. As a sophomore, he averaged 12.9 points, four rebounds, and 1.4 assists and earned Third Team All-Big 12 honors. On April 8, 2021, he declared for the NBA draft but returned for a third season.

As a junior at Texas Tech, Shannon averaged 10.4 points before entering the transfer portal in March 2022. He committed to Illinois on April 29, 2022. After his first season, he declared for the 2023 NBA draft and participated in the combine before withdrawing and returning. In his final season, he was a front-runner for National Player of the Year before a six-game suspension. After a preliminary injunction ended the suspension, he resumed play and finished the season.

Shannon was selected 18th overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 2024 NBA draft.

Shannon functions as an explosive athletic wing with deep range, transition finishing, and defensive versatility. His college trajectory, from unheralded high school recruit to Big 12 freshman to National Player of the Year candidate, reflects steady growth punctuated by adversity. In the NBA, his development centers on three-point consistency, defensive discipline, and maximizing his athletic tools in a structured offense.
