About Scottie Barnes
Barnes is an American forward who has established himself as a franchise cornerstone since being selected fourth overall in the 2021 NBA draft. A versatile wing with elite defensive tools and playmaking ability, he arrived in Toronto after a standout freshman season at Florida State and has since earned multiple All-Star selections.
Born Scott Wayne Barnes Jr. on August 1, 2001, in West Palm Beach, Florida, he was raised alongside three siblings by his mother, Kathalyn Wilkins. He described his upbringing as difficult, with the family lacking stable housing and living in challenging neighborhoods. He began playing basketball as a third-grader in a Salvation Army league in Fort Lauderdale with his older brother, often competing against much older opponents.
As a fifth-grader, Barnes caught the attention of local coaches with his size, energy, and competitive drive. He attended Cardinal Newman High School in West Palm Beach as a freshman before transferring to Montverde Academy, where he played alongside Cade Cunningham, Moses Moody, and Ryan Nembhard. He was a consensus five-star recruit and the top-ranked player in Florida.
Barnes played one season at Florida State, earning third-team All-ACC honors as a freshman in 2021. He was known for his defensive versatility, passing vision, and leadership, often playing point guard in a 6 ft 9 frame. He declared for the 2021 NBA draft and was selected fourth overall by the Toronto Raptors.
As a rookie, Barnes was named the 2022 NBA Rookie of the Year, beating out Evan Mobley and Cade Cunningham. He continued to develop as a two-way playmaker, earning his first All-Star selection in 2024, making him the first member of his draft class to reach that milestone. He was named an All-Star again in 2026.
Barnes functions as a modern Swiss Army knife with the size to guard multiple positions, the vision to run offense, and the finishing ability to score inside. His Florida State tenure showcased a player willing to sacrifice individual stats for team success. In the NBA, his development centers on three-point shooting, mid-range creation, and establishing himself as a primary offensive hub for a contending team.
