Stanley Umude

Umude is a Nigerian-American guard who reached the NBA through the undrafted free-agent route after a winding college path that included Summit League stardom and a graduate season in the SEC. He has navigated Exhibit 10 deals, two-way contracts, and G League assignments with Detroit and San Antonio.

Born Stanley Umude on April 12, 1999, he attended Earl Warren High School in San Antonio, Texas. As a senior, he averaged 23.2 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, and 2.1 assists per game and earned All-District honors. He committed to South Dakota in November 2016.

At South Dakota, Umude came off the bench as a freshman, averaging 1.1 points. He broke out as a sophomore with 14.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game, earning First-team All-Summit League honors and representing the largest single-year scoring increase in Division I. As a junior, he averaged 16.7 points and 6.3 rebounds and was named to the All-Summit League Second Team. As a senior, he averaged 21.5 points, seven rebounds, and three assists, again earning First Team All-Summit League honors. He scored a career-high 41 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against South Dakota State on December 12, 2020. He then transferred to Arkansas.

After going undrafted in 2022, Umude signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Detroit Pistons, was waived, and joined the Motor City Cruise. On January 12, 2023, he tied the Cruise record with seven three-pointers made in a game, totaling 26 points. On February 10, 2023, he signed a 10-day contract with Detroit. He later signed a two-way deal with Detroit in October 2023 and a standard contract in February 2024.

Umude functions as a score-first guard with deep range, size for the position, and a knack for getting hot quickly. His college trajectory, from bench freshman to Summit League star, reflects steady offensive growth. At the NBA level, his game centers on perimeter shooting, transition scoring, and making the most of limited opportunities in reserve roles.
