Knicks Fans Recovering After Attack Outside San Antonio Hotel

Security presence at an NBA playoff game, used for a report on Knicks fans attacked in San Antonio
Summary

Dan and Lawrence Prager said they were ambushed outside a San Antonio hotel after traveling from New Jersey to watch the Knicks win Game 5 of the NBA Finals.

What was supposed to be a Knicks championship trip ended with a father and son recovering from an attack in San Antonio.

Dan and Lawrence Prager, of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, traveled to Texas for Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Dan said the goal was to watch a historic Knicks win and make a memory with his father. Instead, the family says the pair were ambushed outside their downtown San Antonio hotel.

The attack happened just after they got out of a rideshare. Lawrence, 62, said his next memory was waking up in the hospital. Dan, 29, said he saw his father go down almost immediately.

"We had just gotten out of the car, two, three seconds after," Dan said. "I see my dad go down immediately."

Dan said multiple attackers punched, kicked and stomped on them. He described trying to hold his father's head up while calling for help.

"My dad was completely unconscious, lying in a pool of his own blood," Dan said. "I was just holding his head up, trying to wake him up, shouting, 'Somebody call 911. We need an ambulance.'"

Lawrence suffered a brain bleed, facial injuries and a serious shoulder injury. The brain bleed was later considered small enough to heal on its own, but Lawrence was still waiting for MRI results on a Grade 3 AC joint injury.

San Antonio police are still looking for suspects, according to the report. No arrests have been announced in the Pragers' case. The family said detectives obtained surveillance video from nearby businesses and the hotel, and believe multiple people may have been involved.

The Pragers also tried to separate their case from another story circulating online. They said two women arrested this week in a separate attack involving Knicks fans are not connected to what happened outside their hotel.

Both the Knicks and Spurs contacted the family after the attack. New York sent championship merchandise and a signed Josh Hart photo. San Antonio sent gift baskets while Lawrence was recovering in Texas.
