OG Anunoby has moved from Finals hero to shelter-cat recruiter.
NBC New York reported that the Knicks forward is partnering with Royal Canin, VCA Animal Hospitals and Animal Care Centers of NYC to push cat adoption across the city. ACC is New York City's largest shelter system, and Anunoby's role was to pick five cats who needed homes.
They are being called "OG's Starting Five": Penne, Sammy, Roxie, Damu and Lil Leo.
The early results were real. Three of the five were adopted within days, including Damu, an 11-year-old cat with medical issues. Katy Hansen, ACC's director of communications, said the campaign helped make that adoption possible and may have brought in people who adopted other cats after visiting the shelter.
Anunoby had a large pool to choose from. Hansen said ACC had more than 300 cats available, and she praised his selections, especially Roxie. Roxie, a 6-year-old orange-and-white female, was still available and looking for a quiet adult home. Sammy, a 4-year-old male, was also listed as available.
The support package gives adopters a soft landing. Cats adopted from Anunoby's group receive one year of Royal Canin food and one year of complimentary unlimited exams from VCA. Royal Canin is also donating 50,000 pounds of pet food through Greater Good Charities.
Anunoby averaged 21.2 points and 4.8 rebounds in the Finals. This is a different kind of win, and a good use of a hot New York spotlight.
