Caleb Houstan

Houstan is a Canadian forward who entered the professional ranks after one season at Michigan, bringing a five-star pedigree, Montverde Academy pedigree, and international junior experience with the Canadian national team. A top-15 recruit who reclassified to graduate a year early, he joined a Michigan recruiting class ranked No. 1 in the country and produced as a freshman before declaring for the draft. Born Caleb Michael David Houstan on January 9, 2003, in Canada, he attended Montverde Academy in Florida for his first three high school years. On July 17, 2020, he announced he would graduate a year early and reclassify to the class of 2021. As a freshman at Montverde, he helped lead the Eagles to a 22-3 record and the semifinal of the prep national championship. As a sophomore, he averaged 10 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists while shooting 53.1 percent from three-point range, helping the Eagles to a 25-0 record and the No. 1 national ranking before the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Montverde was declared the prep national champion. He was the only non-senior to start on a roster that included Scottie Barnes, Cade Cunningham, Moses Moody, Day'Ron Sharpe, and Zeb Jackson.

As a junior, he helped lead the Eagles to a 21-1 record and the No. 1 seed in the inaugural NIBC tournament. Montverde defeated Sunrise Christian Academy 61-57 to win the NIBC championship. On February 5, 2021, Sunrise Christian Academy defeated Montverde 66-69 in overtime, ending high school basketball's longest win streak at 44 games. Houstan led Montverde with 19 points and 10 rebounds. He was named to the 2021 McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand Classic rosters, becoming the first Michigan signee to earn the distinction since Daniel Horton in 2002. Both the McDonald's and Jordan Brand games were canceled for the second consecutive year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Houstan won a silver medal with Canada at the 2019 FIBA Under-16 Americas Championship and a bronze medal at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup. At the 2017 U15 Canadian National Championships, he was named to the All-Tournament First Team and helped Ontario to a 5-0 record, posting 21 points and 11 rebounds in the championship game against Quebec.

On October 30, 2020, Houstan committed to Michigan over offers from Alabama, Duke, and Virginia. He was the No. 2 rated player in Florida and No. 14 overall by 247Sports, becoming Michigan's highest-rated recruit in the modern recruiting era. Michigan's 2021 recruiting class was ranked No. 1 in the nation by 247Sports, ESPN, and Rivals. As a freshman at Michigan, he averaged 10.1 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game. On February 23, 2022, he scored a career-high 21 points in a 71-62 win over Rutgers. Following the season, he declared for the 2022 NBA draft.

Houstan is a stretch-forward with a high-level shooting stroke, positional size, and a basketball IQ developed in elite prep school and international environments. At Montverde, he demonstrated catch-and-shoot proficiency at an elite level, connecting on over 53 percent from three as a sophomore.
