Jaylon Tyson

Tyson is an American wing who entered the NBA as a first-round pick in 2024 after a winding college career that spanned three programs and featured multiple transfers. He has played for the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he has contributed as a backup wing with scoring flashes and defensive versatility.

Born on December 2, 2002, in Allen, Texas, Tyson attended John Paul II High School in Plano. As a junior, he averaged 23.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.1 assists and helped the team win its first state championship. As a senior, he led the program to the state semifinals with a 26-2 record, averaging 22.3 points, 4.7 rebounds, 4.1 assists, and 2.1 steals. He was named district MVP and a first-team all-state selection. Rated the 34th-best recruit in the 2021 class by Rivals, he committed to Texas.

At Texas, Tyson appeared in eight games as a freshman, averaging 1.8 points in limited minutes. He entered the transfer portal and moved to Texas Tech, where he started 31 games and averaged 10.7 points and 6.1 rebounds, ranking eighth in the Big 12 in rebounds. After the season, he entered the portal again, citing issues with the coaching staff, and committed to California.

The NCAA initially denied his eligibility waiver as a two-time transfer but granted it in November 2023. At California, he became a key scorer and playmaker. The Cleveland Cavaliers selected him with the 20th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft and signed him on July 3. During his rookie season, he made 47 appearances for Cleveland, averaging 3.6 points, 2.0 rebounds, and 0.9 assists. On April 13, 2025, he scored a season-high 31 points with seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals against Indiana. On January 16, 2026, he scored a career-high 39 points, including seven three-pointers, with five rebounds and four assists in a win over Philadelphia.

Tyson is a versatile wing with scoring ability from all three levels, a solid frame, and defensive versatility. He attacks the rim, shoots from three-point range, and uses his length to contest shots and generate steals. His offensive game expanded in the NBA to include more off-the-dribble counters and playmaking reads.
