About Brook Lopez

Lopez is one of the most enduring centers in modern NBA history, evolving from a traditional post scorer into a three-point-shooting, shot-blocking defensive anchor over nearly two decades. Drafted 10th overall in 2008, he spent nine seasons with the Nets franchise, became its all-time leading scorer, added an All-Star berth, and later transformed his game to win a championship with Milwaukee and earn two All-Defensive selections. His late-career reinvention as a stretch-five and rim protector extended his relevance well into his thirties.

Born Brook Robert Lopez on April 1, 1988, in Panorama City, California, to a Cuban father, Heriberto Lopez, and mother Deborah Ledford, he moved from Los Angeles to Oak Harbor, Washington, in second grade before settling in Fresno, California. He attended San Joaquin Memorial High School with his twin brother, Robin Lopez, and future NBA player Quincy Pondexter. As a 7-foot senior, he averaged 13.6 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks. Both brothers committed to Stanford University early in 2005. Lopez's maternal grandfather played in the National Industrial Basketball League for the Milwaukee Allen-Bradleys, foreshadowing his eventual connection to the city.

At Stanford, Lopez averaged 12.6 points and 6.0 rebounds as a freshman, earning All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and All-Pac-10 Freshman Team honors. As a sophomore, he averaged 19.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks, was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team and the All-American Third Team, and hit a game-winning buzzer-beater in overtime against Marquette in the second round of the 2008 NCAA tournament. On March 31, 2008, both Lopez brothers declared for the NBA draft. Brook was selected 10th overall by the New Jersey Nets, while Robin went 15th to the Phoenix Suns.

Lopez made his NBA debut on October 29, 2008, and was selected to the 2009 Rookie Challenge. For his rookie season, he averaged 13.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks. He became the Nets' starting center after an injury to Josh Boone and held the role for nine seasons, accumulating the franchise's all-time scoring record. He earned his only All-Star selection in 2013 as a member of the Brooklyn Nets. After the 2016–17 season, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for one season before signing with the Milwaukee Bucks.

In Milwaukee, Lopez reinvented his offensive game, adding a three-point shot that earned him the nickname Splash Mountain. He became the defensive anchor of a championship team, protecting the rim and stretching the floor for Giannis Antetokounmpo. He won his first NBA championship in 2021 and was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 2020 and 2023. After several seasons in Milwaukee, he signed with the Los Angeles Clippers.

Lopez is a unique center whose career spans two distinct identities. Early in his career, he was a low-post scorer with soft touch, footwork in the paint, and reliable mid-range shooting. Later, he transformed into a stretch-five who shoots threes at high volume, protects the rim at an elite level, and anchors drop coverage in pick-and-roll defense. His combination of size, shooting range, and shot-blocking timing makes him one of the most stylistically influential big men of his generation. Offensively, he spaces the floor, scores on post-ups when matched against smaller players, and finishes lobs. Defensively, he is a deterrent at the rim with disciplined positioning and verticality.

Lopez enters the 2025–26 season with the Los Angeles Clippers. His résumé includes a Stanford game-winner against Marquette, a 10th overall draft selection, nine seasons as the Nets' all-time leading scorer, an All-Star berth in 2013, a one-season Lakers stop, an NBA championship with Milwaukee in 2021, two All-Defensive Second Team selections, a late-career three-point reinvention, and a twin brother who played 16 NBA seasons. His path from Panorama City through Fresno and Stanford to nearly two decades in the NBA reflects a career defined by adaptability, durability, and one of the most successful positional transformations in league history.
