He attended Paterson Catholic High School before transferring to St. Anthony High School, where he compiled a 119-6 record as a four-year starter and was named Parade All-American, McDonald's All-American, and New Jersey Player of the Year.

At UCLA, Anderson was named second-team All-Pac-12 as a freshman and Most Outstanding Player of the Pac-12 tournament as a sophomore. He declared for the 2014 NBA draft, and the San Antonio Spurs selected him with the 30th overall pick. He spent four seasons in San Antonio before signing with the Memphis Grizzlies in 2018. After four seasons in Memphis, he signed with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

In 2023, Anderson became a naturalized Chinese citizen, taking the name Li Kai'er, and represented China at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.
