Danilo Gallinari put a blunt label on his own career.
In a HoopsHype Q&A, Gallinari was asked whether he ever thinks about how things might have changed if he had stayed with the Knicks and the Carmelo Anthony trade never happened. He said the topic still comes up with family, friends and people connected to New York, even if he does not dwell on it every day.
Then he went further. Gallinari said injuries created a lot of what-if in his career, adding, "I'm probably the biggest what-if guy in the history of the game, maybe." He also said the injuries happened to him more than to most athletes, but that he tries not to spend too much time there.
New York is part of the pull. Gallinari was drafted by the Knicks in 2008 and became one of the key pieces moved to Denver in the 2011 Anthony trade. That left an alternate version of his career for Knicks fans to revisit.
The quote also fits the wider debate around injury-shaped NBA careers. Gallinari may not top every fan's what-if list, but his point was personal and clear: the talent was real, and the interruptions never stopped coming.
