Jalen Duren's next contract is becoming one of Detroit's biggest offseason questions.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype reported that there is a belief in league circles that Duren is seeking close to $40 million per year, roughly 25 percent of the NBA salary cap. Multiple NBA executives who spoke with HoopsHype still project Duren to remain with the Pistons, with the final number landing somewhere in the mid-$30 million range annually.
That gap is the story. Duren was recently underwhelmed by Detroit's initial offer and plans to explore possible sign-and-trade scenarios, according to Sam Amick of The Athletic. The Pistons, though, have maintained that they want to keep their 22-year-old All-NBA center.
Cade Cunningham also wants him back, according to Scotto's report. That matters for a Detroit team trying to build around Cunningham's prime instead of reopening the middle of its roster.
Duren's restricted free agency gives the Pistons some control, but it does not make the negotiation simple. A rival offer sheet could force Detroit closer to Duren's number, while a sign-and-trade path would test how much value the market attaches to a young center at that salary.
For now, the expectation around the league still points to Duren staying in Detroit. The price is the part still being negotiated.
