About Jalen Duren
Duren is an American center who entered the NBA as a lottery pick in 2022 and has developed into an All-Star and All-NBA performer with the Detroit Pistons. Known for his physical tools, rebounding, and interior presence, he transitioned quickly from high school and one college season to a starting role in the league.
Born on November 18, 2003, in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania, Duren moved with his family to New Castle, Delaware, as a child. He played football and baseball before committing to basketball as he grew taller. At Gunning Bedford Middle School, he stood 6 feet 5 inches as a seventh-grader and drew attention from AAU scouts. By eighth grade, he had reached about 6 feet 8 inches and led the 15U Team Final squad to a MADE Hoops League championship. He attended Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, where he averaged a double-double as a freshman and helped the program win consecutive Philadelphia Catholic League titles. After his sophomore year, he transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, a national powerhouse.
Duren reclassified to the 2021 recruiting class and was rated a consensus five-star prospect. He committed to Memphis and played one season for the Tigers. During his freshman campaign, he established himself as a force in the American Athletic Conference, using his size and athleticism to dominate the paint.
The Charlotte Hornets selected Duren with the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NBA draft. On draft night, the Hornets traded his rights to the New York Knicks, who immediately flipped him to the Detroit Pistons. In Detroit, he stepped into a rebuilding frontcourt and earned a starting role early in his career. He was named an NBA All-Star and earned his first All-NBA Team selection during the 2025-26 season, marking his arrival as one of the top young centers in the league.
Duren is a traditional big man who relies on size, strength, and leaping ability around the rim. He scores on lobs, putbacks, and rim rolls, and he uses his length to protect the paint and rebound at a high rate. His defensive positioning and shot-blocking instincts have improved with experience, and his offensive game centers on finishing plays created by guards rather than self-creation.
Duren enters the next phase of his career as an established starter and All-Star in Detroit. His rapid rise from a middle-school growth spurt to a lottery pick and All-NBA selection underscores a trajectory built on physical development, elite recruiting pedigree, and consistent production in the paint.
