Detroit is reportedly offering Jalen Duren a five-year deal near $35 million per year, while Duren is seeking more than $40 million annually.

Jalen Duren's extension talks with Detroit have a clear number gap.

According to ESPN's Tim MacMahon, league sources say the Pistons are offering a five-year deal in the range of $35 million annually. Duren, represented by Chafie Fields of The Team, is asking for an average salary above $40 million.

That difference adds up quickly over five seasons. One Western Conference executive told ESPN that both sides can justify their position. An Eastern Conference executive was more blunt, saying Duren and his agent are not being realistic because they are anchored to a max-type offer.

The market context helps Detroit's argument. Only six centers are set to make more than $35 million next season: Nikola Jokic, Joel Embiid, Karl-Anthony Towns, Domantas Sabonis, Rudy Gobert and Alperen Sengun. Chet Holmgren could be added depending on positional framing, since he starts at power forward but often slides to center for Oklahoma City.

Duren is young and important to Detroit's frontcourt, so the Pistons have reason to keep him. But $35 million per year is already starter money with real cap weight. The next move is whether Duren's side can create leverage above that line.
