The Lakers' Jonathan Kuminga idea is easy to understand. The fit is harder.
Los Angeles has been linked to Kuminga as it looks for another young wing around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. The appeal is obvious: size, athleticism, downhill pressure and a player who still has room to grow at 23.
The concern is role clarity. Kuminga's frustration in Golden State was tied to how he was used, with Steve Kerr often needing him to play more like a power forward than a true on-ball wing. A Lakers version may ask for the same things: cutting, screening, defending bigger players and living without the ball for long stretches.
That is where the tension sits. Doncic and Reaves will control much of the offense. If Kuminga is playing next to them, he may have to defend at the point of attack, space the floor better than he has in the past, and accept a lower-usage job than he might want.
The Lakers do need athleticism on the wing. They also need players who make the game cleaner for Doncic, not more crowded. Kuminga can help if he buys into the dirty work. If he is chasing a larger offensive identity, the same questions that followed him out of Golden State would follow him to Los Angeles.
