Luka Doncic has not given the NBA a public sign that he is unhappy with the Lakers. That is why Tim MacMahon's warning landed with edge.
MacMahon said on The Hoop Collective that rival teams are still watching because Doncic's extension does not give Los Angeles a decade-long runway. His comparison was Nikola Jokic in Denver: a superstar can say the right things, mean them, and still have the rest of the league planning for a bad turn.
"It's the same thing with Luka," MacMahon said. "He's done nothing but express optimism and excitement about the Lakers since he signed that extension. But it's not that long-term of an extension. And you better believe there's teams around the league that are looking at that situation and saying, hey, if this thing goes sideways, we'd sure love to get Luka midway through his prime."
The contract is the reason this stays on the board. Doncic signed a three-year, $165 million max extension with Los Angeles. The deal runs through the 2027-28 season and includes a player option for 2028.
There is also business noise around the franchise, with reports tying the Lakers to another ownership transition involving Bob Iger, Josh Kushner, Mark Walter and Jeanie Buss's fight over the family's remaining shares.
None of that means Doncic is looking around. He has leaned into the Lakers and said he wants to bring a championship to Los Angeles. MacMahon's point is narrower: if the team stalls, the timeline gives rivals a reason to stay ready.
