The NBA's gambling problem now has another major legal chapter.
Malik Beasley and former NBA big man Ed Davis have been indicted on federal charges tied to an alleged betting scheme involving prop bets and manipulated player performance. Prosecutors allege the scheme involved Beasley during his 2023-24 season with the Milwaukee Bucks.
The case includes alleged sports bribery, wire-fraud conspiracy and money laundering. Reports on the filing also name others connected to the alleged operation, including former agent Paolo Zamorano.
One game identified in the discussion around the indictment was Milwaukee's Jan. 26, 2024 matchup against Cleveland. Pablo Torre noted that date because it was the same night Jontay Porter left a Raptors game against the Clippers after four minutes.
Beasley has not been convicted, and the allegations still have to move through court. That distinction matters. But the basketball fallout is already severe: reports have tied the investigation to Detroit pulling back from a three-year, $42 million offer.
For the NBA, this is another direct test of how the league handles prop betting risk around active players.
