Jaylen Brown is officially a Philadelphia 76er.
The Sixers announced the deal after the trade became official on July 6. Philadelphia receives Brown, while Boston receives Paul George, first-round picks in 2028 and 2031, and second-round picks in 2028 and 2030.
Brown framed the move as a new start. He said he was excited to begin the next chapter in Philadelphia and pointed to a group he described as hungry, competitive and committed to winning. He also said he wants to build trust with his new teammates while continuing his community work through the 7uice Foundation.
The basketball pitch is easy to understand. Philadelphia is adding a five-time All-Star and 2024 Finals MVP to a core with Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe. Brown is coming off a season in Boston in which he averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds and 5.1 assists while carrying a heavier load with Jayson Tatum recovering from an Achilles injury.
Sixers president Mike Gansey called Brown one of the league's top players and pointed to his two-way skill set, playoff experience and leadership. Managing partner Josh Harris also welcomed Brown while thanking George for his time in Philadelphia.
For Boston, the move breaks up the Brown-Tatum partnership that delivered the 2024 title. For Philadelphia, it is the first blockbuster swing of the Mike Gansey era and another attempt to build a title-level group around Embiid and Maxey. It also shifts the rivalry, because the Celtics just helped send a proven playoff wing to a team they may have to beat again.
Brown now walks into one of the league's loudest markets with a clear job. The Sixers did not make this move for patience. They made it because the East is open enough for a team with this much top-end talent to believe it can win now.
