About Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Gilgeous-Alexander is a Canadian guard who has established himself as one of the premier players in the NBA since being selected in the first round of the 2018 draft. Known by his initials SGA, he has earned multiple All-Star selections, MVP awards, and led the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first championship since relocating from Seattle.
Born Shaivonte Aician Gilgeous-Alexander on July 12, 1998, in Toronto, Ontario, he grew up in Hamilton. His mother, Charmaine Gilgeous, is a former professional track athlete who competed in the women's 400 metres for Antigua and Barbuda at the 1992 Summer Olympics. His father, Vaughn Alexander, coached him during his youth. He attended St. Thomas More Catholic Secondary School and Sir Allan MacNab Secondary School before moving to Hamilton Heights Christian Academy in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for his junior and senior years.
Gilgeous-Alexander played one season at Kentucky. The Charlotte Hornets selected him 11th overall in the 2018 NBA draft and traded him to the Los Angeles Clippers on draft night. As a rookie, he made the NBA All-Rookie Second Team and appeared in the 2019 playoffs. In July 2019, the Clippers traded him to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
In his first season with the Thunder, Gilgeous-Alexander was the team's leading scorer and helped them reach the 2020 playoffs as the fifth seed. After injury setbacks in the following seasons, he earned his first All-Star selection and was voted to the All-NBA First Team in 2023, finishing fourth in scoring with 31.4 points per game.
In the 2024–25 season, Gilgeous-Alexander won the NBA MVP award after leading the league in scoring with 32.7 points per game. He then won the NBA Finals MVP award as the Thunder captured the 2025 championship, becoming the fourth player in NBA history to win MVP, Finals MVP, and the scoring title in the same season. He also became the first Canadian ever to win Finals MVP and the second Canadian MVP, following Steve Nash.
With the Canadian national team, Gilgeous-Alexander won bronze at the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup and was named to the All-Tournament Team. In 2023, he received the Northern Star Award as Canada's Athlete of the Year.
Gilgeous-Alexander functions as a smooth, methodical scorer with elite footwork, mid-range mastery, and playmaking vision. His ability to get to his spots and finish with either hand makes him one of the most difficult players to guard in the league. His development from a rookie trade piece to an MVP and champion underscores steady improvement and mental toughness.
