Born Tyrese Kendrid Maxey on November 4, 2000, in Dallas, Texas, he attended South Garland High School. As a sophomore, he averaged 23.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and 2.5 steals. As a junior, he averaged 22.5 points, seven rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 2.3 steals and led South Garland to its first Texas state basketball tournament appearance. He scored 46 points in the state semifinals. As a senior, he averaged 21.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists and was named a McDonald's All-American and Texas Mr. Basketball.

Maxey played one season at Kentucky, setting a school record with 26 points in his collegiate debut. He averaged 14.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists as the only player to start all 37 games. On February 27, 2019, he scored a career-high 29 points against Arkansas. He was named SEC Rookie of the Year by the Associated Press and declared for the 2020 NBA draft.

The Philadelphia 76ers selected Maxey 21st overall in the 2020 NBA draft. He received limited playing time as a rookie but became the starting point guard after Ben Simmons's absence. In his fourth season, he won the Most Improved Player Award and earned his first All-Star selection in 2024.
